Tauber: Reduce impact on climate

With global warming increasing and our climate experiencing changes never seen before, it is time we join the rest of the world to help take action. On Saturday Oct. 24, 2009, the International Day of Climate Action took place throughout the world. From Africa, to Europe, to Asia, awareness is being raised on how important our climate really is. So in our very own town of Redding on the green last weekend, exhibits about forest, ocean, and agriculture climate changes, were on display. Simple suggestions about what we can do as individual families, and collectively as a town, to help reduce our impact on the climate was also presented.

In school as a seventh grader I learn about the effects of global warming in terms of the arctic ice melting and animals having to adapt to new habitats, but the local causes of climate change haven’t been covered.

I think that it is most important to learn about the topic at a young age since I’m pretty sure we’ll be living on this planet for a long time. There are so many little, easy things we can do in our homes such as turning off electric devices, changing lights, and recycling.

Thankfully, many people already make a good habit of doing these things but now is always a good time to start. If every family changed one light to a compact florescent bulb we would save 1,319,700 pounds of carbon dioxide each year! Also, by keeping your tires filled with air you get better gas mileage saving not only money at the pump, but also preventing up to 20 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the air.

So please join our town and people all over the world in taking a stand for a safe climate future. You can go to www.350.org to learn more.

Anthea Taeuber, 13, is a John Read Middle School student, who prepared a presentation on the affects of climate change on our oceans at the local 350.org event.
