Redding’s contribution to the international Day of Climate Action took place one day later than the scheduled world-wide celebration, but the spirit of the event was in no way affected by the rain delay. State Senator Toni Boucher (R-26) and State Rep. Jason Bartlett (D-2) both gave speeches, as did Patrice Gillespie of the Sierra Club and Zach Smith, a Joel Barlow senior, who explained why the number 350 is so important.
The centerpiece of the event was artist Margaret Roleke’s sculpture “3 5 0.” A photo of the event, taken by Joel Barlow student Charlie Ambler, has been uploaded onto the www.350.org Web site, joining images from Australia and Afghanistan, to Ghana and Ghandi Park, India.
Several businesses participated, representing different ways to improve efficiency and protect the environment. GPH Green Builders from Georgetown, Practically Green, an earth friendly home products store in Ridgefield, and Parisot Design LLC presented information on a zero energy, Energy Star-rated Meadow Home in Redding they recently built,
Mimi Auer from Brighter Concepts displayed solar-powered attic fans and day lighting products, Green Star offered a home energy audit program as part of the CT Clean Energy Commission, and Bill Hill of Warrup’s Farm demonstrated the farm’s solar powered irrigation pump. In addition, The Redding Education Foundation, The Redding Clean Energy Committee, The Redding Garden Club, The Redding Land Trust, and The Keystone Club also hosted booths.
