Current events group features hot topics, not attitudes

From the local elections to nuclear energy, the topics vary, as do the opinions, at Peter Bonfanti’s weekly meeting of the current events discussion group.

Approximately 14 people gather each Thursday at the Community Center for a moderated discussion on the hot topics of the week over coffee, guided by members’ own research and headlines in the newspapers.

With the motto, “You don’t have to win a point to make a point,” every effort is made to make sure each voice in the room is heard.

“Usually we have one or two topics the group or Peter selects,” said Jim Lang, a discussion group member. “Some take time to research a subject. While there is not a whole lot of structure, there is as far as the focus for discussion.”

The idea of gathering members of all ages from the community is something Mr. Bonfanti borrowed from the Ridgefield Community Center where he moderated a similar discussion group.

“The thing I’m most proud about is that we have very strong, differences of opinion, but everyone is respectful,” Mr. Bonfanti said.

The group is now on hiatus for the winter, but will pick up again for a spring semester starting in April. Those interested in signing up for the course may do so through the Senior Center. Call Marie Sibilio, center director, for information at 938-9725.
