Songbirds are topic at club’s meeting

Jayne Amico, president and founder of The Mount Vernon Songbird Sanctuary, will be the Redding Garden Club's guest speaker at its meeting on Monday, Jan. 11, at the Redding Community Center.

The migratory bird rehabilitation sanctuary is a non-profit organization in Southington. Ms. Amico is past president of the Connecticut Wildlife Rehabilitators Association and has been rehabilitating songbirds since 1997. She currently teaches The Basics of Songbird Rehabilitation at the state Department of Environmental Protection and also instructs wildlife rehabilitators at conferences in the U.S. and other countries. In addition, she is also sub-permitted to band and is involved with the banding and study of vagrant hummingbirds in the Northeast.

The sanctuary strictly specializes in caring for small migratory songbirds familiar to our region — flycatchers, chimney swifts, swallows, tanagers, hummingbirds and others. Her presentation will provide insight into why rehabilitation is so important, the type of injuries/conditions that occur and how the process works up to the release of the birds. Important factors to the survival for the songbirds will be discussed including how to reduce the negative impacts around our homes.

The Redding Garden Club meets monthly and always welcomes guests and potential new members to attend ($4 fee). Meetings begin at 11:30 a.m. with a light lunch and business meeting, followed by a specific program at 1 p.m.
