Barlow benefits from improv competition

Both old and new members of Troupe du Jour, an improv group of high school students under the direction of Diana Canova, took part in a competition titled Troupe du Jour vs. Troupe du Yester-jour at the Redding Community Center on Jan. 9.

Organizers report the show “was a tremendous success and was sold out by Saturday morning. There were nine members of the alumni “Troupe du Yester-jour” competing against the 17 current members of Troupe du Jour. The alumni may have had a slight edge according to the judges but the audience was the big winner.”

The score as determined by three audience members was so close that there are plans in the works for a rematch in the spring at Joel Barlow High School.

The event raised more than $1,000 for the Joel Barlow Arts Foundation, and will be used to support fine and performing arts programs at the school.

Troupe du Jour was formed during the summer of 2006 after several Barlow students were inspired by the Freestyle Repertory Theatre of New York, which performed as part of the Hermes Art Series at the Mark Twain Library. Troupe du Jour meets weekly for practice.
