Auditions set for Barlow play

Auditions for Joel Barlow High School’s spring play, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, will take place on Monday, March 22, and Tuesday, March 23, from 2:15 to 6 p.m. in the school’s auditorium.

Students do not need to have acting experience to be in the show! They simply need to prepare either a monologue or two-person scene from Hamlet, not to exceed two to three minutes in length. It does not have to be memorized.

After prior years’ successful modernized versions of Romeo & Juliet and Taming of the Shrew, the school welcomes back Nancy Ponturo as the director of Hamlet. Ms. Ponturo has directed the Summer Shakespeare program at New Pond Farm and has conducted Shakespeare classes for high school students.

She is an accomplished theater, film, and television actor. Some of her directing credits include serving as the artistic director of the Young Connecticut Playwrights Festival, directing at the American Globe Theatre in New York City, and directing at the Rich Forum in Stamford.

“By making these Barlow productions modern and by abridging the script, many student actors, who were once intimidated by Shakespeare, have come to find his work both accessible and lots of fun,” Ms. Ponturo said.

Producers Barbara Bloom and Ian Cieplik encourage all interested Barlow students to take the “leap of faith” and audition for the spring show.

Hamlet will be gracing the stage at Barlow on Friday, May 21, and Saturday, May 22, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 23, at 2. Rehearsals will start at 2:15 on Tuesday, April 6. A mandatory student/parent orientation meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 7, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the JBHS cafeteria.

Informational updates will be posted to the JBHS “Hamlet2010” eboard on an ongoing basis.
