Korman Music Series: Cellist Baverstam will perform

Internationally acclaimed cellist Sebastian Bäverstam will perform on Sunday, March 28, at the Mark Twain Library. The Korman Music Series, created to honor the memory of past library president Sinclair Korman, is hosting the concert, which begins at 2 p.m. Admission is free, but space is limited. To reserve, call the library at 203-938-2545 or sign up at the front desk.

Sebastian Bäverstam began his cello studies when he was four, and gave his first solo recital at Harvard University’s Dunster House at the age of six, performing Bach’s First Cello Suite along with other works. Now 20, he has since performed concerti in the U.S., Europe, China, Venezuela and Brazil.

He was the 2006 Winner of the Boston Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition and in 2007 was asked to substitute for Lynn Harrell, playing the Schumann Cello Concerto with the Cape Cod Symphony. He gave his Weill Hall debut in 2002 and has appeared multiple times on the nationally syndicated radio program “From the Top” and in a PBS documentary filmed in Carnegie Hall. Mr. Bäverstam has attended the following festivals: Aspen, Banff Centre, Verbier and the International Music Academy of Switzerland with Seiji Ozawa. He currently studies with Paul Katz at the New England Conservatory.

“Again, it is such an honor to have such an extraordinary musician playing in our lovely little library, and it’s all thanks to the generosity of Martha Korman and her family,” said Cornelia Hurwitz, Korman Music Series chair. “This promises to be one of the most moving concerts we’ve hosted.”

The Mark Twain Library’s Korman Music series was created in memory of Sinclair Korman, who died in 2007. He and his wife Martha shared a home in Redding for over 25 years, and devoted an enormous amount of time and energy to the library. It was for this reason that his family decided to create a living memorial — in the form of a music series — with the memorial donations made in Mr. Korman’s name “by family and friends.” There have been three concerts offered so far; the final event of the Korman Music Series is being planned for late spring.
