For 102 years a little white church has stood at the top of the hill on Portland Avenue in Georgetown. Officially organized in July 1908, the property was purchased for $75 in August, and the building completed in November 1908. Now members and friends from Danbury, Ridgefield, Redding, Wilton, Weston, and Westport, worship and serve the community from Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
To celebrate this, we invite all to worship with us outdoors on Sunday, Aug. 1, on the Parsonage lawn at 10 a.m. Afterwards, attendees are invited to stay for a barbecue and lawn games. Hot dogs and hamburgers are supplied by Ancona’s Market and salads and desserts by friends and members.
The church’s community outreach includes collecting canned and boxed food, as well as house cleaning supplies, for the town food pantries. Travel size personal toiletries are given to the Danbury branch of Americare’s Free Health Clinics.
This year’s Coffee Hour booth at the Georgetown Day festival raised $325 for the Connecticut Food Pantry. When the earthquake struck Haiti, our Sunday School collected funds and made Health Kits to be distributed by Lutheran World Relief. The church raised $160 for ROAR, the Ridgefield Operation for Animal Rescue at its Blessing of the Animals service. In addition, its confirmation class made fleece blankets for the dogs and cats at this facility. The church’s winter drive is for toys and clothing for Saint Luke’s Life Works of Stamford Holiday Gift drive. These gifts benefit children who live with parents suffering with chronic illness, or are homeless or live in poverty.
The church “has worked to supply food, cleaning supplies, personal toiletries, cared for God’s creatures, and provided moments of joy for children during the Christmas season and are thankful for God’s many blessings. We strive to follow Christ’s great commandment to love our neighbor’s as Christ loves us. Won’t you please join us as we celebrate 102 years of this love on Aug. 1? You are welcome indeed.”
