The West Redding Volunteer Fire Department’s 57th Annual Hickory Grilled Charcoal Steak & Chicken Dinner is set for Saturday, Sept. 11, from 4:30 to 8. The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 12.
A menu favorite is the Firehouse Jubilee Cocktail, an alcohol-free Blood Mary-like vegetable drink created many years ago by Tom Lalley and his wife Helen. While the secret recipe has been sold many times, the Lalleys made sure the firehouse would always have special rights to the recipe.
Usually firehouse guests drink the cocktail while waiting in line for either a 10-ounce steak or grilled half chicken. Either meal comes with a salad bar, mashed potatoes, gravy and buttered rolls. Available for sale at a moderate price are beer, wine and soda.
Music from the 40s through the new millennium is played during the event, and entertainment for children is provided, as well as raffle entertainment for the adults.
The cost is $18 for an adult dinner; $15 for a senior dinner; and $10 for a child dinner. Tickets have already been mailed to members of the community. Those wishing to attend should send a check payable to the WRVD. Tickets will be available at the pre-paid ticket table. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
The dinner is the department’s largest fund-raiser of the year. All proceeds go to funding new equipment and/or training for the department.
