News submission guide

Submitting news, announcements, letters, pictures, etc.

The best way to submit news announcements or letters is via e-mail. You may simply type your words into a message, or attach a text file, a rich text file (RTF), or a Microsoft Word document to a message. (Please do not send WordPerfect documents.)

We do not accept faxed submissions.

News releases about coming events and activities, school happenings, sporting events, business announcements, etc. should reach us at least one week in advance of the issue in which you would like it published.

We publish announcements about individual students in college, prep schools or public school. In the case of college news, please let us know whether the student is a Joel Barlow High School graduate, the year of graduation, and any special activities the student maybe involved in. In all cases, also include the parents' names and address.

We welcome news of local businesses, or local residents who work in businesses out of town. We cannot publish news of businesses whose only connection with town is the fact that they have customers here.

News of arts and entertainment events occurring in our area should be sent to the arts editor. Submission information can be found in the Arts & Leisure section. Events occurring in town should be sent to both the arts editor and the news editor.

Birth Announcements

Birth announcements are free. Most include name, birth date, birth weight, birth length and location of birth. Often people also add other siblings (and ages) in the family, any other family information, a photo, any fun/interesting story about the birth.

Kim and W. Grant Gregory have announced the birth of a son, Gunnar Garland, on Dec. 22 at Greenwich Hospital., He was born 9 pounds, 9 ounces and 20.5 inches long. He has a brother William, 4, and a sister, Kathryn, 2. Grandparents are Karen and Grant Gregory of Greenwich and Mr. and Mrs. Duane Loven of Grand Forks, N.D.

Weddings & Engagements

Wedding and engagement announcements are free. Many include names of the bride and groom and their parents, occupations, where they graduated from, where they live and the wedding date, or any other interesting stories or plans for a honeymoon.

Francis and Diane Jones of Main Street have announced the engagement of their daughter, Jennifer Mary, to Matthew Lee Smith, son of Robert and Barbara Smith of Berryville, Va. Ms. Jones graduated from Ridgefield High School in 1997 and from the University of Richmond in 2001. She lives in Winchester, Va. and is society editor of The Winchester Evening Star. Mr. Smith, who also graduated from the University of Richmond in 2001, is a financial analyst at Blodgett, Blip and Bloomer in Winchester. He lives in Stephens City, Va. They plan to marry in June at St. Mary's Church in Ridgefield.

Sample wedding announcement

Monica Smith, daughter of Joan and John Smith of Ridgefield, was married to Jonathan Jones, son of Carol and Peter Jones of Milford, Mass. on Dec. 4, 2005. The Rev. George E. Johnson performed the double-ring ceremony at St. Katharine Church in Lexington, Mass.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a light ivory double lux mikado with beaded bateau neckline and hem, with a cathedral train. She carried a bouquet of ivory roses, burgundy calla lilies, stephanotis, and hints of gold. Vanessa Smith of Main Street was maid of honor for her sister. Bridesmaids were Leslie Lee of New York City and Anne Watley of Hoboken, N.J. They wore burgundy dresses and carried burgundy calla lilies with hints of gold. Karl Barth of Mount Vernon, N.Y. was best man. Ushers were Christopher Jones of Nantucket, Mass. brother of the groom, Scott Land of Mesa, Ariz., and Arthur Hobbs of Milford.

The bride graduated from Ridgefield High School in 1998 and from the University of Connecticut in 2002. She is a program manager with Softy Taste in Bedford, Mass. The groom is a 1995 graduate of Bedford High School and served in the Army from 1995 to 1997. He received a doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Massachusetts in 2003 and is a pharmacist at Bedford Hospital.

After a reception at the Glens in Lexington, they honeymooned in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. They live in Arlington, Mass.

Obituaries

Obituaries are also news stories, published for free. The text is written -- or at least, edited -- by the staff, based on information supplied by the family, funeral home, our files, interviews, and other sources. We will publish the obituaries of residents, former residents and members of a resident's family. Some things to include are date and place of death, when and where the person was born and who their parents were, details of the person's life (including graduations, military service, employment, charity work, church affiliation, hobbies and interests). Recollections of character traits can be included with attribution (ie. "He had a great sense of humor and could really tell a joke," said his wife.). Include family members who survive and those who are predeceased, as well as where one can send contributions or condolences.

Charlene A. Groglio of Greenwich died Tuesday, April 8. She was 72 years old.

Born on May 26, 1935, in Port Chester, N.Y., Ms. Groglio was the daughter of the late Charles and Elenor Amundsen.

She worked for Bloomingdales for 20 years, at Appleseeds and at Chancy D’Elia.

Family members said Ms. Groglio enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, as well as traveling with them to their various sporting events throughout the country.

“The time and memories with Charlene, including shopping and traveling, will always be cherished in the hearts of her family and close friends,” they said.

Ms. Groglio was predeceased by her husband, John Groglio, on July 15, 2006.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Carino of Greenwich; two brothers, Ronald Amundsen of Danbury and Carl Amundsen of Milford, and her grandchildren, Charles Carino (Sue), Kelly Carino and Jeffrey Carino, all of Greenwich.

Friends may call tomorrow from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 11, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul R.C. Church on Sherwood Avenue in Greenwich.

Interment will follow in Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye, N.Y.

Letters to the Editors

Letters to Editor must arrive by Monday at 5 p.m. to be considered for that Thursday's edition. Letters may be up to 300 words long -- shorter is better; brief letters stand a better chance than long ones of being published right away. Letters must include the name, address and daytime phone number of the sender. Letters may be submitted as e-mails or they may be posted (typed and double-spaced or very neatly hand-printed). We do not accept faxed letters. We publish letters only from residents, former residents or people who work in the town. Letters that are libelous or in poor taste will not be printed. We also accept some unsolicited op-eds, if the writer is a resident and can provide credentials in his or her area of expertise.
