Memorial set for Mary Travers

A memorial celebration for Mary Travers, the Mary in the Peter, Paul and Mary folk trio, is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 9, at Riverside Church in New York at 7 p.m.

Ms. Travers, who called Redding home for many years, died Sept. 16 of cancer. She, along with Peter Yarrow and Noel “Paul” Stookey are noted for their songs like Blowin’ in the Wind, Where Have All the Flowers Gone? and If I Had A Hammer.

Mary Elizabeth Manypenny, a former resident of Redding, died at her home in Stratford, on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009. Mrs. Manypenny, 93, was the widow of Gerald Manypenny.

Born Mary E. Anstine on Oct. 15, 1917, in Mifflin, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Lester A. Anstine and Nelle (Yorgy) Anstine. She grew up in Pennsylvania.

   

Harry Carlson, retired well driller

Harry Carlson, 85, a lifelong resident of Georgetown, died on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at Danbury Hospital. Mr. Carlson, 85, was the husband of Mabel (Tanner) Carlson.

He was born on March 11, 1924, a son of the late Hilmer and Rhoda Anderson Carlson. Before his retirement, he had been a self-employed well driller.

   

Elizabeth Poggenburg, volunteer

Elizabeth “Betty” Poggenburg died on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009. Mrs. Poggenburg was the widow of J. Kenneth Poggenburg, Sr.

She was born Oct. 20, 1908 in New York City, where she taught in elementary schools there for 39 years. She was a longtime resident of Redding and recently of Meadow Ridge.

   

David Scherb, retired businessman

David Eugene Scherb died Oct. 15, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer, at his home in Redding surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Scherb, 61, was the husband of Bernice Cobb Scherb.

Born in Patterson, N.J., June 6,1948, to Eugene Rudolph and Marie Ratzlaff Scherb, he was raised in Ridgewood, N.J. He then attended Bradley University in Illinois where he was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity and received a degree in political science. Later, he attended Suffolk University Law School, where he met his wife, Bernice. He then enlisted in the Army National Guard where he served for six years.

Mr. Scherb began his professional career at Metropolitan Life in the sales organization and advanced through several management positions. While living in New Jersey, his son Cliff was born in 1979. Next, recruitment brought him to North Carolina where he worked at RJR Nabisco in Winston-Salem, the place where his son Ryan was born in 1982. In 1987, he accepted a position at PepsiCo in Purchase, NY. He retired from PepsiCo in 2005 as Senior Vice President of Compensation and Benefits.

   

‘Jack’ Finlay, resident’s brother

John “Jack” Matthew Devine Finlay, 50, of Tallahassee, Fla., died suddenly on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009. He was the brother of Catherine Finlay Samose of Redding, his oldest sister.

Mr. Finlay was born on May 26, 1959, in Norfolk, Va., the youngest child of Capt. Robert W. Finlay and Ruth Devine Finlay. He made lifelong friends wherever he went, his family said. As the son of a naval officer, these friendships were forged across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
