Mary Elizabeth Manypenny, a former resident of Redding, died at her home in Stratford, on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009. Mrs. Manypenny, 93, was the widow of Gerald Manypenny.
Born Mary E. Anstine on Oct. 15, 1917, in Mifflin, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Lester A. Anstine and Nelle (Yorgy) Anstine. She grew up in Pennsylvania.She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1938. While there, she joined and remained active in the Delta Gamma Sorority. After graduation, she was a social worker. In 1941, she married Thomas E. Dellinger of Toledo, Ohio. The couple had two daughters, Susan and Janet. Mr. Dellinger died in 1945 in India while on active duty as an Army Air Corps pilot. The then Mrs. Dellinger remained in Ohio and subsequently married Gerald Manypenny in 1947. The couple moved to Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. in the early 1950s and to Redding with their family in 1980. They lived in Redding until 2002. Ms. Manypenny was a member of the Redding Congregational Church from 1980 until her death.
She is survived by her two daughters, Susan Manypenny Davies of Sandwich, N.H., and Janet Manypenny Bono of Stratford; two sons-in-law, John Davies and Marc Bono; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, “as well as many loving friends who will miss her humor, grace, and positive attitude toward life,” her family said. She was predeceased by her brother John.
A memorial service will be held at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, Redding on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 4 p.m. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Congregational Church (First Church of Christ, Congregational, P.O. Box 1055, Redding, CT 06875) or Connecticut Hospice, Inc. (2 Trap Falls Rd. Suite 408, Shelton, CT 06484).
