Regardless of how it would finish in the field of competitors, the Joel Barlow High girls swim team accomplished something for its efforts at the South-West Conference finals last week.

Improving their times was well within the reach of the Falcons, who were one of 12 teams at the Masuk High pool on Saturday, Nov. 7. A number of them did that while earning 112.50 points to place ninth overall, a slight improvement from last season’s performance.

After a promising win against a strong Newtown squad, the Joel Barlow High boys soccer team had high expectations coming into its South-West Conference semifinal match against Brookfield.

The Falcons wanted to come back with a vengeance after a disheartening 5-1 loss to the Bobcats early in the season. Having improved dramatically since then, the Falcons were expecting their mid-through-late season run to continue into the rematch.

What had the makings of a one-sided victory was instead a close contest when the Joel Barlow High girls soccer team hosted E.O. Smith in the first round of the state Class L tournament on Monday.

The game was slightly reminiscent of the Falcons’ run in the tournament last year, when they battled teams that outshot them 20-2. This time, however, Barlow dominated in shots with 22 to E.O. Smith’s 11. Despite the Falcons’ dominance of play, the determined visitors forced the Falcons into overtime before winning 2-0.

Making things easier for its opponent was not what the Joel Barlow High football team had in mind when it hosted Pomperaug.

Yet the Falcons did give the visitors some good opportunities on Saturday, Nov. 7. Between turnovers and giving up a few big plays, the Falcons put themselves in a hole from which they could not escape in a 44-20 loss.

Things seemed to start well enough for the Falcons, who actually had the lead for a brief time. Striking first, they capped off an early scoring drive with a three-yard touchdown run with 6:18 left to go in the first quarter.
