Arborial panel plans expanded Ridgefield tree guide

The Ridgefield Tree Committee is looking for more trees, but could use some help from the public.

“We’ve been pleased with the town residents’ response to our Notable Tree Project,” said Tom Venus, newly chosen chairman of the Ridgefield Tree Committee. “Since our 2004 publication Ridgefield’s Notable Trees has almost sold out, the committee is planning to expand the list and republish the book.”

Ridgefield’s Notable Trees lists the 20 trees, both locally chosen and state-recognized, currently on the committee’s list. Mr. Venus added that “Ridgefielders’ involvement will be a critical element as we develop a plan for adding trees to the list.”

At the September meeting the committee tentatively identified eight more species that might be added to the list, but said it is open to suggestions from residents. The tentative list includes American Holly, Black Walnut, Eastern White Pine, Eastern Redbud, Eastern Red Cedar, Sweet Gum, Shagbark Hickory and Tulip Tree.

Will Molyneux, a member of the group, said the tentative species choices were based primarily on whether the species was native to the area, but added that its being common in town was also considered.

Other ongoing issues of concern to the committee, according to Nancy Boersma, outgoing chairman, are the overmulching of trees. “We encourage the use of only two to three inches of flat mulch, not touching the tree trunk,” she said.

The committee is also concerned about signs attached to public trees, “This practice violates the tree ordinance and is subject to a $50 fine, in fact.”

“As we develop our plans through the fall and winter, we’ll be looking for citizens’ suggestions,” said Mr. Venus. He invited anyone to send feedback or suggestions to the Tree Committee at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
