The public is invited to attend the Derby Historical Society’s annual meeting on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 56 South Cliff St., Ansonia.
This year, the Society is presenting the Dorothy Larson award to Dan Waleski of Derby. Each year, the award is given to a Valley resident for his or her contributions to the community, which coincide with the Society’s mission, said Julia Baldini, the Society’s executive director. The mission is to preserve, protect, and honor the Valley’s cultural and traditional values.

Spooner House will be the beneficiary of two events the weekend before Valentine’s Day.
The annual Valley Has a Heart food collection will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, at three Stop & Shop stores in the lower Naugatuck Valley — at 100 Division St. in Ansonia, 15 Franklin St. in Seymour and 898 Bridgeport Ave. in Shelton. Stop and Shop is the marquee sponsor for this year’s Valley Has a Heart drives.

SEYMOUR — A “SafeSitter” class is being offered by the Seymour Ambulance Association Sunday, Feb. 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ambulance Association headquarters, 4 Wakeley St., Seymour.
This course is designed to teach 11-13 year-olds babysitting techniques and safe activities to do with children.

Auditions for the 2012 Midsummer Fantasy Renaissance Faire will take place Saturday, Feb. 11 from 12:30 to 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 12 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ansonia Armory, 5 State St., Ansonia.
Those auditioning for scripted parts and for wandering cast should prepare a short monologue to perform (1 minute maximum) or a short song and bring a resumé, a head shot and a form of identification. Auditioners may wear Renaissance garb, if desired.

The Derby Historical Society announces the annual “Open Hearth Meal Auction” that benefits the Society’s programs and collections.
The winning bidder in the auction will have a meal prepared for six guests by docents in the David Humphreys House over an open hearth.
