From the DTC: Vote for the Democratic slate

Connecticut Magazine has just recognized Weston as being number one in the state among towns of comparable size. This doesn’t happen by accident. In large part, it is the result of the hard work of many elected officials.

In 2007, Weston voters re-elected Mike O’Brien and elected Melissa Koller to the Board of Finance. In 2009, Westonites seated Gayle Weinstein as first selectman and David Muller as selectman, and voted to re-elect Dick Bochinski and elect Denise Harvey to the Board of Education.

Since then, Weston has benefitted by having hard-working, fiscally responsible, community-minded Democrats leading our three major boards.

Sometimes it is hard to understand what “politics” has to do with small towns such as ours. After all, with the exception of first selectman, all elected officials are volunteers, doing what they believe is best for our town, and all should be applauded for their commitment.

I cannot speak for the Republicans, but I can tell you a bit about what we, as Weston Democrats, stand for.

We pledge to work hard to keep Weston the lovely quintessential New England town we all fell in love with when we first moved here.

We pledge to do whatever is within our means to protect the most needy of our citizens.

We pledge to safeguard our excellent school system during these tough economic times.

And, we recognize all these goals must be accomplished in a fiscally responsible manner, while moving our community through the beginnings of the 21st Century.

It is undeniable that over the past four years, we have done just that. Weston has made it safely through the toughest economic challenge we have faced in decades.

We are ready for what lies ahead. An overhaul of the town charter that has been needed for decades is now moving forward, and being conducted in a bipartisan manner. Preparations are in place for strategic planning to commence right after the charter revision.

Capital projects that lingered have been completed. The Lachat project has finally been moved to the next level with “out-of-the-box” thinking to fund a center that keeps to the intent of the deed and will benefit all of Weston.

Under our stewardship, the Board of Education has made tough choices: saving taxpayer dollars, without impacting education — doing more with less.

The Board of Finance has made crucial investments that have earned the town hundreds of thousands of dollars. Our money has been spent wisely.

I am proud of the work we have accomplished and the people dedicated to Weston who serve the town as Democrats.

Please read through the LWV insert in today’s Forum and information mailed to each of your homes demonstrating the impressive credentials of our candidates.

We are honored by your continued trust in Weston’s Democratic Party. We take that trust very seriously and pledge to keep Weston the place we love, the place we all call home.

Please vote Row A for the Democrats on Nov. 8.
