STATEMENT: Police Commission

When I learned a year ago that one of our police commissioners had resigned, I applied to fill the vacancy because I believed I was well suited for the post. I have been privileged to serve on this commission for the past year and am hoping for the chance to continue serving.

We are fortunate in Weston. We have a top-notch department led by an able chief and filled with officers who act with professionalism, dedication, and integrity. Community support is strong, morale is high, and crime is remarkably low.

Occasionally, though, we have issues that bring the actions of our officers under scrutiny. We’ve recently had two high profile and dangerous incidents in Weston. In those cases, it is vital the commission perform its job of overseeing the police in a thorough and searching manner.

Having served in a number of jobs in the criminal justice system, including inspector general for the Los Angeles Police Department, and as a federal prosecutor specializing in fraud, corruption and civil rights, I have unique qualifications for the job and know what questions to ask and what solutions to seek.

Because town resources are limited, my fellow commissioners and I must also keep close watch on the budget. This means not only watching what we spend, but also making sure that the department’s polices and procedures don’t expose the town to risk and liability.

If returned to the commission, I’ll continue working hard to ensure fiscal responsibility and public safety for our town.
