As Thanksgiving draws near, so does the need for a holiday feast for approximately 100 families and elderly in Weston.

Weston Social Services will provide Thanksgiving baskets for these neighbors with the help of the Weston Women’s League (WWL), whose members will gather goods and assemble 40 baskets.

League members have already collected non-perishables, but are asking the community for additional food donations. Emmanuel Church, St. Francis of Assisi Church, the Boys Scouts and other town organizations are coordinating food drives for the baskets, as well. Individuals are also welcome to create and donate Thanksgivings baskets as part of this outreach.

Earlier this year, Police Chief John Troxell and the commission approved the creation of a captain’s position, which would act as the department’s second in command under the chief.

Weston Police Chief John Troxell was surprised last week to hear that former Selectman Glenn Major had complained about police overtime being over budget in the 2008-09 fiscal year.

“Overall, we gave $27,721 back to the town,” Chief Troxell said. “Yes, we were over $4,276 in the overtime line, but we offset that by a large amount — $8,948.72 — in the salary line and elsewhere... We do monitor all of our accounts very closely. If we see something is going over budget, we know we have to cut back somewhere else.”
