Y’s Women host Weston basketball ambassador Mike Evans

The next Y's Women Meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 13, featuring Michael Evans, a native of Weston, as the guest speaker. His topic is Sports Diplomacy Here and Abroad: How Basketball Can Change the World.

He is the 29-year-old founder of Full Court Peace, a non-profit organization that uses basketball as a means of diplomacy around the world. He is also a blogger for the Huffington Post and the varsity boys basketball coach at Stamford Academy Charter High School.

Weston teen band The Interstellar Elevators performed original music at the NAMM SchoolJam USA battle of the bands competiton in Anaheim, Calif., on Jan. 21.

While the band did not win the contest, they had a good experience performing in front of an audience of more than 500 people and a panel of professional judges.

Young guitarists play for Weston Food Pantry

Julia Schreder, 13, a student at Weston Middle School, and other young Fairfield County classical guitarists will be preforming in the Community Room at the Weston Public Library this Sunday, Feb. 12, at 2.
The concert is estimated to last about an hour and is open to all.
Admission is free, but attendees are asked to bring canned goods that will be donated to the Weston Food Pantry.
The concert will feature works by Fernando Sor, J.S. Bach, Leo Brower, and other famous classical pieces.
All the students are under the instruction of Joseph Shields of New Haven.

   

Youth orchestras perform this weekend

The Norwalk Youth Symphony (NYS) will be presenting the second concert of its 56th season on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 3 in Norwalk Concert Hall, 125 East Avenue, Norwalk.

Performing are NYS' five tiered ensembles performing selections by Schubert, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Larry Clark, Clare Grundman, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Richard Meyer and G. Holst.

   

Weston School website has new look

The website for the Weston Public Schools has a new design, more features and is easier to use.

The new site went live last week and, according to Erik Haakonsen, the school district's director of technology, feedback has been positive so far. "The site has a cleaner look and people like it," he said.

The new look was a collaborative effort among Mr. Haakonsen, the school administration, staff, and school board officials.

   

Weston Kiwanis food drive is this Saturday

The Kiwanis Club of Weston will hold its annual food drive to benefit the Weston Food Pantry this Saturday, Feb. 11.

This year, the drive will be expanded to include both Peter's Market on Weston Road and Ancona's Market on Route 7 as drop-off locations.

   

Weston P&Z approves Gary resubdivision

The Planning and Zoning Commission has approved a resubdivision application for 165 Old Redding Road.

Following a public hearing on Monday, Feb. 6, the commission voted to allow the property's owner, Don Gary, to divide a two-acre piece from a 10.72-acre property.

   

Weston Police Commission approves Humvees

The Weston Police Commission approved the acquisition of two military surplus Humvees on Tuesday night, Feb. 7.

In a unanimous vote, the commission OK'd the vehicles which had become the subject of controversy because of the nature in the way they were acquired.

After the commission's vote of support for the Humvees, Weston Police Chief John Troxell was pleased. "These vehicles will be a big help to the town, especially during storms and emergencies. They will also decrease the wear and tear on our regular vehicles, which aren't as well equipped for emergencies and rescues," he said.

   

Weston Ethics board still reviewing Finkel conflict of interest case

The Weston Board of Ethics concluded taking testimony in the conflict of interest case involving finance board member David Finkel.

After a brief round of questions on Monday, Feb. 6, for Jo-Ann Keating, the school district's director of finance and operations, Robert Lamb, the board's chairman, announced the board was finished with interviews and testimony and called for a "motion to proceed."

The commission set Monday, Feb. 13, at 6:30 p.m. to deliberate on the matter.
