Christopher Plummer of Weston wins his first Golden Globe award

Weston actor Christopher Plummer may now add "Golden Globe" winner to his long list of achievements.

Mr. Plummer won the Hollywood Press Association's Golden Globe award on Sunday, Jan. 15, for best supporting actor for his performance as an elderly widower who tells his son he is gay in the Michael Mills film Beginners.

In his acceptance speech at the ceremony, Mr. Plummer thanked several people, including Mr. Mills, co-star Ewan McGregor, and his family — including his favorite dog, Cosmo.

He concluded with a special thank-you to his wife Elaine Taylor, who was smiling from the audience. "...And lastly, a lady called Elaine, my wife of 43 years, whose bravery and beauty haunts me still," he said.

Best known for his perfomance as Captain Georg Von Trapp in The Sound of Music, Mr. Plummer has won numerous awards for his work on stage and screen, including two Emmys and two Tonys.

He received his first Oscar nomination two years ago for his performance as Leo Tolstoy in The Last Station. In 2010, he earned accolades for his performance as Prospero the magician in The Tempest at The Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario.

Mr. Plummer's acting career began more than 50 years ago, and at 81, he shows no signs of slowing down. He said he will never retire from show business. "I think retirement is death and people just sort of disappear slowly when they retire. But my work is my hobby as well," Mr. Plummer said to The Forum last year before the Oscars.

The Golden Globes are often viewed as a precursor to the Academy Awards. Oscar nominees will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
