Several million bags of Doritos snack chips are currently hitting store shelves featuring the likeness of Westonite David Burstein.
In June, Mr. Burstein and several other young adults throughout the country received DoSomething awards from the DoSomething charitable organization, which recognizes young adults for their work and commitment on important causes.
In addition to receiving a substantial cash award and other prizes, photos of the winners and stories of their accomplishments are appearing for a limited time on bags of Doritos.Mr. Burstein was recognized for his work creating a documentary film, 18 in ’08, which was shown more than 1,000 times during the 2008 presidential election season as part of a national campaign to register, engage, and mobilize young voters.
“This is a great way to get my message about youth engagement with politics to millions of young people,” Mr. Burstein said.
Mr. Burstein added that he was proud to be in the company of other award recipients and was glad their stories would reach a wide audience of young people.
“The DoSomething award winners have incredible stories. They are involved in causes that range from Maggie, who built an orphanage and school in Nepal, to Marvelyn, who increases awareness of preventive steps against HIV/AIDS daily, to Darius who has raised millions for research on muscular dystrophy, and Eric, who is empowering a whole new generation of young leaders in Africa, ” he said.
Mr. Burstein, 21, is a longtime Weston resident and 2006 graduate of Weston High School. He attends New York University.
When Mr. Burstein was 16, he wished more young people had voted in the 2004 presidential election. He vowed to change that in 2008 by launching his film 18 in ’08, which featured interviews by Mr. Burstein with politicians and actors encouraging young adults to register to vote and participate in elections. He is at work on a book about the millennial generation.
Caraluzzi’s Market on Route 7 in Georgetown is carrying 12-ounce bags of Nacho Cheese Doritos featuring Mr. Burstein and his story.
