Weston student collects toys for kids, families living with HIV/AIDS

Even though the holiday season just around the corner, some children will not be receiving gifts. Many children throughout Connecticut and Westchester County are affected by HIV/AIDS and many more are living with a parent who is suffering or has died from AIDS.

With the parents unable to work, most of these children live in poverty, and even the bare essentials are difficult to purchase.

With the goal of bringing smiles to these children’s faces, Weston Middle School student Isabel Berch, in her second year as local coordinator, has set up drop-off spots for the Bread & Roses Toy and Gift Collection in the Weston Public Library, Weston Middle School and the Weston Intermediate School.

Now in its 20th year, Bread & Roses is the only regional program providing gifts to children affected by HIV/AIDS. Last year, the program delivered more than 15,000 personalized wrapped gifts to children living in Fairfield County and New Haven. These donations are the only presents most of these children received.

Donations may be dropped off anytime until Thursday, Dec. 3.

Although any new, unwrapped gift or toy is appreciated, there is an urgent need for gifts appropriate for teenagers and middle schoolers. Also, gift certificates and cards are welcomed.
