Youth soccer: Weston captures Connecticut Cup

Against all odds going up against much larger towns and cities, the Weston under-14 boys soccer team made history by being the first town team ever to win the Connecticut Cup last weekend.

Making history is not new to the team. Last year, as a seventh-grade, under-13 team, the boys made the first ever Connecticut Cup finals appearance for a Weston squad.

It was not Lloyd Weinstein’s first trip to the Men’s World Masters Powerlifting Championships. But it turned out to be a special one just the same.

Weinstein has competed in the event on a number of occasions, winning his division three times. This year’s championships also brought victory.

   

Little League: Marlins win National League

The Marlins defeated the Brewers 9-3 on Nov. 1 for the Weston National League championship at Bisceglie Scribner Park.

Liam McCarthy led off with a solid single for the Brewers and advanced to second on a base hit by Alex Fruhbeis. He scored the first run of the game on a passed ball and overthrow to third.

Ultimately, it was one thing that could decide the outcome of the Weston High girls soccer team’s South-West Conference quarterfinal game against Lauralton Hall.

After 80 minutes of regulation play and two overtimes that followed, the two sides were no closer to determining a winner than they were at the start of the contest. Only after a round of penalty kicks did top-ranked Lauralton Hall turn the tables in its favor for a 3-2 win last Friday, Oct. 30.

   

Under-11 soccer: War Lords edge Ridgefield

The Weston War Lords under-11 boys soccer team scored two goals in the final five minutes to beat Ridgefield 2-1 on a muddy field at Scotland School.
