Girls swimming: Trojans soak Falcons

The regular season ended on a good note for the Weston High girls swim team last week.

Taking on Joel Barlow, the Trojans dominated most of the events. In most they would take first place as well as several of the spots that followed. Such was good enough for a 97-78 win at the Newtown High pool on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

On Wednesday, Oct. 28, the high school girls swim and dive team traveled to Newtown High School and faced Joel Barlow High School at their final dual meet of the season. The Trojans finished on top, with a final score of 97-78 to Weston, a pleasing outcome for both the Weston athletes and coaches.

The Trojans started out strong, with Katie Angelidis, Olivia Clark, Catie Ledwick and Lauren Garner winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:07.90. Georgia Flynn, Lauren Solinsky, Charlotte Berger and Lydia Sykes finished third in 2:19.96.

The 200 freestyle was dominated by Shelby Fortin, who won in 1:59.51, while Danielle Fontaine (second) and Tess Maggio (fourth) followed with respective times of 2:18.27 and 2:28.50.

In the following event, the 200 individual medley, the Trojans went one-two-three. Victoria Arel led the way (2:25.60), Angelidis placed second (2:32.51), and Garner placed third (2:42.39).

Barlow was first in the 50 free and Fontaine had Weston’s fastest time with 28.52 for second. Carolyn Figliola took third in 31.13, and Lauren Solinsky was fifth in 32.07.

The diving event was next and Julia DiMarco and Andrea Janis represented Weston well, finishing second and third respectively, scoring seven points for Weston, and bringing its lead 50-25 at the halfway point of the meet.

Ledwick got the win in the 100 butterfly in 1:13.37 to lead another one-two-three finish for Weston. Charlotte Berger followed in 1:15.24, and Carlye Rosen was next in 1:16.14.

The 100 freestyle was won by Karen Bottger (57.83) got Weston the win in the 100 free, while Maggio was third (1:07.02). With Weston having a comfortable lead at this point it had a number of swimmers compete exhibition style for the remainder of the meet and not score points.

Another first came in the 500 with Olivia Clark finishing in 6:02.21 in first. Solinsky, who swam exhibition, would have placed second in a time of 6:30.25.

Weston also won the 200 free relay, with Fontaine, Ledwick, Arel and Bottger in 1:54.41. Maggio, Lucy Watson, Flynn and Figliola finishing third (2:01.76). Sofie Davis-Kos, McCall Kelley, Jillian Kleban and Paige Goldstein swam exhibition in a time of 2:19.68.

Flynn, Angelidis and Sykes swam the 100 backstroke. Flynn placed third (1:19.00), while Angelidis and Sykes swam exhibition (1:09.61 and 1:08.35 respectively). Fortin won the 100 backstroke (1:13.15), while Lucy Watson and Ali Bertan swam exhibition in 1:26.82 and 1:30.27 respectively.

All Weston teams swam exhibition in the 400 free relay. Bottger, Fontaine, Arel and Fortin would have placed first in 4:04.84, while Solinsky, Flynn, Berger and Garner would have placed third.

The Trojans, who finish the regular season at 8-3, compete in the South-West Conference finals on Saturday at Masuk.
