Under-11 soccer: War Lords edge Ridgefield

The Weston War Lords under-11 boys soccer team scored two goals in the final five minutes to beat Ridgefield 2-1 on a muddy field at Scotland School.

Unused to playing on such a small field, Weston had trouble with its spacing, and its midfield play was ragged in the first half. Still, with excellent play from defenders Herschel Meadow and Taylor Kendall, they were able to keep the opposition from creating many scoring opportunities. Ridgefield did manage to score a goal with just 2 minutes left in the half, to go up 1-0.

In the second half, Weston midfielders John Anderson and Luke Simboli combined with striker Cameron Okoro to create several scoring chances, but just could not convert. Wing Alex Spencer made some crossing passes, and wing Preston Joffe just missed scoring on a header in front of the Ridgefield keeper.

As the clock wound down, it looked as if the War Lords were going down to a defeat, but, with five minutes left, Okoro was fouled, and converted on the penalty shot, tying the game. Three minutes later, he scored again on an outstanding shot into the upper corner of the goal, and Weston had their win.

Christian Cuevas, Jonathon Katz and Charlie Singer also contributed with their play in midfield. Jackson Aguas, the regular starting goalie, was injured during game warm-ups and could not play. Michael Otworth filled in well during the first half. Midfielder Steve Tyler played keeper in the second, and made two nice saves.
