Trumbull volunteers express admiration for brother firefighters

The danger involved in fighting fires is never far from the minds of Trumbull’s volunteers. Saturday’s deaths of two Bridgeport firefighters drove that point home beyond all doubt.

“I think, for the volunteers in our department, it really makes you feel added respect for those who take that risk on a daily basis,” said Trumbull Center Chief Ed Gratrix. “The best thing we can do is to redouble our safety efforts, and continue to do what we do.”

Bridgeport, an urban center with aging buildings, employs a full-time professional fire department. Trumbull has three volunteer departments, but the volunteers train and test to the same standards as professionals because the dangers are equally real.
