Peggy Reeves, state representative for the 143rd District, announced her campaign contributions have exceeded the required $5,000 goal from more than 150 donors to qualify for public financing under Connecticut’s Citizens’ Election Program (CEP). Her application for a grant from the CEP was approved last week by the State Elections Enforcement Commission.
“I am grateful for the continued enthusiasm from the people in Wilton and Norwalk,” said Ms. Reeves. “Making a difference for our communities is my focus. That’s why I have listened to the people of my district and worked to put their priorities front and center at the Capitol.”
According to a press release issued by her office, in the past year and a half, Ms. Reeves left her mark on a variety of issues, which include protecting the voting rights of veterans, improving Lyme disease treatment, fostering green jobs and green technologies, and fighting for estate tax reform.
“Peggy was instrumental in reforming Connecticut’s estate tax from being one of the most punitive in the nation to being one of the least,” said Paul Burnham, who nominated Ms. Reeves for a second term a month ago.
According to Ms. Reeves, “We must attract businesses and make it easier for residents to continue to call Connecticut home. Estate tax reform helps set the stage for Connecticut to grow again.”
A 32-year Wilton resident whose husband grew up in Norwalk, Ms. Reeves is also a longtime advocate of clean elections and the Citizens’ Election Program. As a member of the Government Administration and Elections Committee in the General Assembly, Ms. Reeves has spoken on the issue to college students and good government advocates throughout the state. “Because of this voluntary public financing program, candidates don’t have to spend time raising large sums of money to run for office. Instead, they should be using that time to talk with voters about the issues that concern them.
“I love working with the people in my district and making a difference on their behalf,” she continued. “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together during my first term, but there is more to be done and I am looking forward to it.”
