Fourth District: Himes to visit 17 towns in 17 days; he'll be in Wilton on Friday

U.S. Rep Jim Himes launched a tour of Connecticut’s Fourth District, called 17 Towns in 17 Days, with a business walk Tuesday in Westport. Over the next 17 days, Himes, a first-term Democrat seeking re-election this November, will visit each town in the district.

Mr. Himes is being challenged by State Sen. Dan Debicella, a Republican, in this November’s election.

According to his office, Mr. Himes plans to highlight each community’s unique strengths and gathering input from individuals in every city and town.

Over the course of the last 20 months, Himes has held more than two dozen town hall meetings, Elizabeth Kerr, his spokesman said. He has also “met with elected officials from every city and town, and actively solicited input from constituents throughout the district though e-mail surveys, Congress on Your Corner events, and meetings with local organizations and individuals,” she said.

This week, Mr. Himes will visit Westport, Norwalk, Bridgeport, Wilton, and Shelton. The remaining events for 17 Towns in 17 Days will be released later this week, Ms. Kerr said.

Mr. Himes visited businesses in Westport along with First Selectman Gordon Joseloff on Tuesday, Aug. 24.

Today, Thursday, Aug. 26, Mr. Himes traveled to the Norwalk Senior Center South where he will held a Q&A in Spanish and English at noon. There he reaffirmed his support for protecting Social Security from privatization, discuss improvements to Medicare resulting from health care reform, and take questions.

After visiting that center, Himes planned to travel to the Norwalk Senior Center, 11 Allen Road, to discuss the same topics. That visit and Q&A will be from 1:30 to 2:30.

Also on Thursday, Mr. Himes will speak at Park City Primary Care in Bridgeport.

The center is holding a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new extension, 64 Black Rock Ave. Himes helped secure federal money, Kerr said, for an addition to the health center, which includes 10 new exam rooms and a new kitchen. The ceremony is from 3 to 4

On Friday morning, the congressman will be serving coffee and bagels to constituents at Wilton’s Connecticut Coffee and Grill, 12 Center St., from 8:30 to 9:30.

Later Friday, Mr. Himes will be on a Shelton business walk to gather input and share information about how new policies affect small businesses. The walk starts at 3:45 in downtown Shelton and is expected to last an hour.

The congressman’s plans for the rest of the Fourth District’s towns will be announced later. Those towns are Darien, Easton, Fairfield, Greenwich, Monroe, New Canaan, Oxford, Redding, Ridgefield Stamford, Trumbull, and Weston.

Should we focus on economic growth?
Are you for replacing the pork-barrel stimulus with a payroll tax cut? Dan Debicella proposes to send back the remaining money and cut your taxes. Jim Himes is opposed.
Do you oppose tax increases? Dan Debicella is for stopping any new tax hikes. Himes wants tax hikes in January.
Should we stop intrusive regulation? Debicella yes. Himes no.

Limit government?
Would you cap the size of the federal government at no more than 20% of GDP (Currently at 26%)? Debicella wants to. Himes doesn’t.
Would you favor forcing politicians to make trade-offs between reforming entitlements, being smarter about defense spending and reducing the number of civilian government employees? Debicella would. Himes wouldn’t.

If Dan Debicella agrees with you, you can join the fight here: https://debicella.blue-swarm.com/donate.

ccdemuth- What does anything you said have to do with our duly elected Congressman getting out- as he has done throughout his term- to meet with, listen to, & learn from his constituents?
Instead, tell us where & when likely voters can meet & interact with your candidate- Haven't heard that he's at all interested in meeting constituents. His just saying 'no' to anything & everything being done to try to deal with the woes of the housing bubble, the banking bubble, the wars- gets us nowhere.
Your preposterous suggestion that Himes doesn't want to deal with reforming entitlements, being smart about defense spending, banking, healthcare, etc. is laughable. What you object to is simply the METHOD of getting to a helpful and manageable end.
Instead of tearing down, belittling, & obfuscating the facts, Mr. Debicella must offer something workable that could get through Congress & not pie in the sky ideas that don't have a chance of getting accomplished.
