Miriam Christensen, mother of Wiltonian

Miriam E. Christensen, 83, wife of the late Harry O. Christensen, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Ridgefield Crossings where she had lived for the past three years.

Mrs. Christensen was born in Wyncote, Pa., daughter of Louis and Matilda (Becker) Seipp.

A retired educator, she taught in the Alpine, N.J., school system from 1950 to 1987.

   

Frank L. Infante, father of Wiltonian

Frank L. Infante, 86, died Saturday Jan. 30, at St. Camillus in Stamford. Born Feb. 24, 1924 in Stamford, he was the only son of the late Quintino and Eleanora Cetrangolo Infante.

Mr. Infante served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and attended the University of Bridgeport. He opened the Stamford Tire Company, which he an until his retirement at age 82.

   

John D. McMahon

John D. McMahon Jr., 65, formerly of Norwalk, died Jan. 29, in Bradenton, Fla.

Mr. McMahon was born and raised in Norwalk. He was a graduate of Fairfield Prep and Boston College in 1966. While living in Norwalk, he was an active member of the Cranbury Baseball League, chairman of the admissions and allocations committee of the United Way, and a treasurer of the Shore and Country Club. At the time of his retirement, he was CFO of JM Layton Insurance Company. In 2003, he and his wife, Carol, retired to Bradenton.

   

Doris Hurdman, former Wiltonian

Doris Anne Franke Hurdman died Jan. 5. She was born May 5, 1934 to Paul and Anna Franke, and grew up in Scarsdale, N.Y. She was the wife of the late Robert L. Hurdman, also of Scarsdale.

Mrs. Hurdman graduated from Scarsdale High in 1952 and graduated from Smith College in 1956, with a BA in English Literature. Reading was a life long passion. In her 20s she worked in New York City at Booz Allen Hamilton and later at Radio Free Europe, a job that shaped her future world views.

   

Jurren Schoonbeek

Jurren Schoonbeek died Thursday, Jan. 28. He was born July 8, 1944 in Gronigan, Holland, to Albertina and Geert. He grew up in Holland, attended business school, and graduated as an accountant. He later worked for Schlumberger and lived overseas for many years before moving to Norwalk, where he lived for the past 20 years.

   

Janet Van Heertum Totten

Janet Van Heertum Totten, 72, of Charlestown died in her home on Jan. 26 after a long battle with ovarian cancer. She was a 30-year survivor of breast cancer.

Mrs. Totten was born in Englewood, N.J. on July 8, 1937 to William and Gertrude (Bohling) Van Heertum. She Totten grew up in Leonia, N.J.

   

Eileen Ferguson, formerly of Wilton

Eileen M. Ferguson, who formerly lived on Linden Tree Road, died Sunday, Jan. 17. She was born Aug. 23, 1922 in New York City.

Mrs. Ferguson considered herself a citizen of the world, calling Londonderry, Vt. and Jacksonville, Fla. home, but her heart was in Eleuthera, Bahamas.

   

Col. Herbert T. Levack, veteran, father of Wiltonian

Col. Herbert T. Levack (USAF Retired), 93, of West Hartford died Jan. 27.

He was born in Athol, Mass., in 1916, the son of Esther (Thompson) and Edmund Levack. He moved to Hartford as a young man.

Col. Levack was a command pilot in the U.S. Air Force flying B-24s in World War II, and C-124s in Korea and Vietnam. He was operations officer for the first Operation Deep Freeze exploring the Antarctica; where he was honored with a mountain named for him, “Mount Levack.” His second career took him to St. Louis, Mo., where he worked for many years at the Aeronautical Charts and Information Center. He was an avid golfer for most of his life.

   

Ida J. Schimenz, worked in Wilton

Ida J. Schimenz, age 91, who lived in Weston for 65 years and also maintained a home in Moultonborough, N.H., died on Wednesday, Jan. 27, in Norwalk Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Robert J. Schimenz, in July 2009.

Mrs. Schimenz was born in Redding, on Sept. 22, 1918, a daughter of the late Stanley and Alexandra Mendick. She attended Norwalk Schools and was a former employee of the Woolworth Department Store, which at that time was in South Wilton.

   

James Lyle, television consultant

James Jeffrey Lyle, a 16-year resident of Wilton, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 23, at Norwalk Hospital from an apparent heart attack. He was 59.

Born in Cleveland on Feb. 2, 1950, he was the son of the late James A. and Eleanor (Crane) Lyle. He graduated in 1968 from Orange High School in Pepper Pike, Ohio. He received his bachelor’s degree in communications and public relations from the University of Miami in Florida. While in college, he assisted with a live children’s TV program, which sparked his interest in television programming.
