Lucille Bernice McMillan Stack, a former longtime Wiltonian who was born in Detroit, Mich., Oct. 30, 1925, to Clarence McMillan and Bertha Trettine McMillan, died in North Carolina on June 12, surrounded by her family after a brief illness, her daughter reported this week.Mrs. Stack leaves behind her husband of 67 years, Reginald Matthew Stack, her sister Muriel Trettine Hall, daughter Erin Stack and her husband Michael Chesla, son Robert Kevin Stack and his wife Angela Stack, son Richard Stack and his wife, Nancy Stack, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and one on the way.
After graduating from high school in Detroit, Lucille was married at age 17 to the love of her life, her daughter said. Mrs. Stack worked at Ford Motor plant during World War II and was entrusted with the distribution of blueprints for the war planes.
Described as a loving wife and mother, she dedicated her life to her family. She was active in the community and church, served on many committees, and helped turn around the Wilton Historical Society, her daughter said. Mrs. Stack, with her husband, also restored antique homes and created beautiful gardens that were featured in magazines.
Mrs. Stack will be remembered as a true and loyal friend, loved by many people including her lifelong sorority sisters, her family said. She was a very generous soul who always made people feel welcome. She made friends wherever she went, they said. She was creative, wrote poems, and loved beauty, they said. She was a woman of conviction who stood up for what she believed in and was dearly loved and will be sorely missed, they said.
A private memorial service was held at the home of her son Richard, followed by burial on family grounds in North Carolina.
Donations in her name may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society (nationalmssociety.org.)
