Wilton High sophomore Katie Warburg finished second at the State Open girls diving championships on Friday night at Hamden High School.

Warburg had 442.10 points to place second behind Greenwich senior Kara Capossela (459.65 points).

Alex Leinroth of Darien was third with 429.90 points.

It’s an iconic image that captures the skill and the entertainment entwined in the brand: A basketball resting on the tip of an index finger extended from a hand rising from a red, white and blue wristband.

In the logo, the basketball has the words Harlem Globetrotters written on it. But if the ball was about to spin on Kurt Schneider’s index finger, then a globe bearing the same two words might be more accurate.

In a game more worthy of a state championship, the Darien High field hockey team beat Wilton, 1-0, last Thursday in a memorable Class M quarterfinal at Darien.

Ellie Riegel’s goal with 7:30 left in the second overtime decided the game.

Wilton, seeded ninth, ended the season at 12-5-1 — with three of its five losses coming to the Blue Wave.

Before the season even started, Todd Stevens thought his team would be hard-pressed to defend its state championship. So when the Wilton High girls swim team finished third at the Class M meet Tuesday night in New Haven, Stevens wasn’t the least surprised.

“I knew going into the season that we probably weren’t going to beat Darien or New Canaan,” said Stevens, the Wilton head coach. “Depth wins championships, and we didn’t have the depth this year.”

   

Boys soccer: WHS falls in state second round

New Canaan scored the game’s only goal late in the game and defeated the Wilton High boys soccer team in the second round of the Class L state tournament last Thursday, 1-0, ending the Warriors’ developing Cinderella story and their 2009 season.

Entering the contest, Wilton coach Jim Lewicki knew his team had to demonstrate the same high level of play and team effort, or better, against New Canaan as it did earlier in the week in the 2-0 win over New Fairfield in the first round.

The third and final game of a grim Wilton trifecta included the added indignity of steady rain, whipped to stinging by 30-mph winds whistling through Veterans Stadium last Friday night.

Neither the conditions nor the host Warriors were unable to stop the Ridgefield High football team, which romped to its sixth straight victory with a 31-0 triumph over Wilton.

The Wilton High girls cross country team ended its season with a ninth-place finish at the New England championships on Saturday at Wickham Park in Manchester.

The Warriors, who were coming off a second-place finish at the State Open, had 287 points, five fewer than 10th-place Keene, N.H.

Wilton High sophomore Katie Warburg finished third at the Class M state diving championships Thursday at Plainville High School.

Warburg had 413.60 points to finsih behind Darien's Alex Leinroth (426.80) and New Canaan's Hannah Singer (417.05).

Warburg had beaten Leinroth and Singer to finish first at the recent FCIAC championships.

   

Football: Wilton falls to Ridgefield, 31-0

Drew Arcoleo ran for two touchdowns as the Ridgefield High football team routed Wilton, 31-0, on Friday night in Wilton.

The Tigers improved to 8-1 with their sixth straight win while Wilton dropped to 2-7 with its third straight loss.

Sean Cobelli kicked a 38-yard field goal and Arcoleo scored on a 32-yard run to give Ridgefield a 10-0 halftime lead.

   

WHS boys soccer, field hockey teams fall in state tourney

A pair of Wilton High teams had their seasons end on Thursday with losses in the state tournament.

In New Canaan, the 23rd-seeded Rams got a goal from Tim Pritchard with five minutes left to beat 26th-seed Wilton, 1-0, in a Class L second-round boys soccer game.

The Warriors, who finished the year with a 5-8-4 record, had several scoring chances, including John Hoag's header that was tipped wide of the net by the New Canaan goalie.
