Pioneer Winemaker
|
DiGrazia Vineyards founder and winemaker Paul V. DiGrazia was an early entrepreneur on the Connecticut wine scene. His winery in Brookfield features an interesting variety beyond the typical red and white, including a number of specialty and dessert wines made with other fruits, from pears to blueberries to sugar pumpkins. The 45-acre vineyard was planted in 1978 and the winery was founded in 1984, when four brands of wine were released. Now DiGrazia features more than 15 different wines, produced from nine varieties of hybrid and American grapes. The winery is known for its Blacksmith Port, which won a gold medal in the American Wine Society Commercial Competition, and also produces sacramental wines. In 1994, DiGrazia wines were served to the President of the United States. Visitors are welcome at the winery daily from 11 to 5 for tastings through December. DiGrazia Vineyards is one of the wineries on the Connecticut Wine Trail, on the Web at www.ctwine.com.
