New Canaan Nature
|
Set on 40 acres in New Canaan, the New Canaan Nature Center has been a popular spot for nature-loving families for more than 40 years. Two miles of walking trails take visitors through diverse habitats, where children, for example, can enjoy feeding the ducks and geese on two ponds. The trails include a 350-foot marsh boardwalk. The Discovery Center features hands-on science exhibits and live animals; other exhibits include a solar greenhouse, an arboretum, gardens, apple cider house, maple sugar shed, and gift shop. There are free live animal demonstrations Saturdays at 3. A regular schedule of children’s activities and programs is offered; the Nature Center has its own pre-school during the school year. Summer camp programs are very popular and early registration is advised. The center also offers New York Botanical Garden horticulture courses. The gift shop in the Visitor Center is stocked with nature-related materials. Buildings are open from 9 to 4 Monday through Saturday; the trails are open daily, dawn to dusk.
