A coastal study center

The Connecticut Audubon Society maintains a nature study center on the shores of Long Island Sound at Milford. Located on 8.4 acres of barrier beach and salt marsh in the Smith-Hubble Wildlife Refuge and next to the Wheeler Wildlife Management area at the mouth of the Housatonic River, the center features a beach walk trail, beach front (no swimming), two observation platforms, a 70-foot observation tower and an exhibit room. Programs include Saturday morning bird walks, stargazing, and salt marsh studies. Weekend guided canoe trips through the marsh are offered in warm weather and make a great family outing. The center is open Tuesdays-Saturdays from 10 to 4, Sundays from noon to 4. It includes a tidepool touch-tank, a salt marsh exhibit and Osprey Cam, offering views of a nest where ospreys have been returning in late March for six years. There is no charge for entry to the grounds or for parking.
