Montgomery Place

A National Historic Landmark, Montgomery Place is a 434-acre Hudson River estate with views of the river and the Catskill Mountains beyond. It’s on the River Road in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y., just north of the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge. The Federal-style house was built in 1804-05 by Janet Livingston Montgomery, widow of the Revolutionary War hero General Richard Montgomery. She established a commercial nursery on the property that her descendants continued, while enhancing the property under the guidance of architect Alexander Jackson Davis and landscape designer Andrew Jackson Downing. The Montgomery Place grounds are open weekends, 10 to 5, May 1 through October; the mansion is currently closed for renovations, but its museum shop will be open when the property is. Picnickers are welcome and encouraged to tour the landscape. The grounds-only pass to the woodland trails, gardens, and orchards is $5; an audio tour is available.
