First Chief Justice
Visitors to the John Jay Homestead in Katonah, N.Y., can see how a wealthy Westchester family lived in the early 1800’s. John Jay was the first chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and retired to the family home in Katonah in 1801. Restored to that period, the John Jay Homestead is open for tours until November (winter hours are by appointment). There is a farm museum in the Main Barn. Visiting hours for the house are Tuesday through Saturday 10 to 4, Sunday 11 to 4, with the last tour an hour before closing. Admission for tours of the house is: $7 adults, $5 New York State seniors, $2 children 5 to 12. The grounds are open year ’round from dawn to dusk. There is a gift shop. Special events include lecture series, concerts, military encampments, and programs for children. Patriots Day will be June 10 and there's an Independence Day celebration on July 4. A State Historic Site, the homestead is overseen by the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation.
