New Canaan History
|
The New Canaan Historical Society, founded in 1889, brings together the history and genealogies of New Canaan families, as well as the relics and curiosities that distinguish the town. Its museum complex at 13 Oenoke Ridge includes the Hanford-Silliman House built in 1764 by Stephen Hanford, a weaver and early tavernkeeper. The New Canaan Historical Society acquired it in 1957. Also on the property are The John Rogers Studio & Museum, currently undergoing a renovation; the one-room Rock School, built in 1799; the Tool Museum; the New Canaan Hand Press, recreating a 19th Century printing office. The Town House includes a costume museum and the historical society’s library. Among the local history books for sale is A Guide to God’s Acre, for a walking tour of the Historic District. The Town House museums are open Tuesday-Friday, 9:30-4:30, and Saturday 9:30-12:30 and 2:30-4:30. Some of the buildings on the property are opened for tours on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 2-4.
