More than 70 aircraft
|
The New England Air Museum at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks has all kinds of flying machines and artifacts, from the Silas M. Brooks Balloon Basket, circa 1870, to fighter jets. The collection is displayed in two heated hangars, one devoted to civilian and one to military aviation, and the museum also includes a mini-theater and an extensive gift shop. Among the planes on display are a vintage DC-3 airliner, a P-47 Thunderbolt and a Corsair from World War II, and modern jets. One of the prized exhibits is the Boeing B-29 Superfortress, restored by dozens of volunteers. Children will enjoy the hands-on exhibits and the gigantic Sikorsky VS-44A Flying Boat, “Excambian.” Museum staff offer “Open Cockpit Days” throughout the year, when visitors may climb aboard up to 15 airplanes. The museum is open from 10 to 5 daily and admission is $9 for ages 12 and older; $8 for seniors, and $5 for children 6 to 11. Children under 6 are admitted free.
