Bates-Scofield House
|
Few areas in New England can claim so much fully restored architectural variety as Fairfield County. Visitors to the Bates-Scofield House Museum in Darien can expect to see 18th and early 19th Century regional furniture, and an 18th Century herb garden, maintained by the Darien Garden Club. The Bates-Scofield House, a saltbox built circa 1736, features a massive central chimney, large fireplace and beehive oven. The house was restored by the Darien Historical Society in 1964 and an interior restoration was recently completed. Art and objects from the society’s collections and a costume display are always on view at the headquarters adjacent to the Bates-Scofield House, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. House tours are 2 to 4 Wednesdays and Thursdays. There is a charge for the tours; use of the library is free. Office hours are 9 to 2 on Tuesday and Friday, 9 to 4 on Wednesday and Thursday. There are monthly after-school programs and summer day camp for children.
