Southport’s Art/Place

Old train stations have been put to many uses, art galleries among them. The open spaces and architecture lend themselves to creative displays, which is exactly what can be found in the cooperative art gallery at the Southport Train Station/Westbound, at 400 Center Street. Art/Place was the idea of Joyce Gilbert, who got together with some fellow artists to discuss finding a place to exhibit their work “without any restraints.” Soon there were 15 artists involved, who eventually were able to rent (after cleaning it out) the restored 19th Century station, and they opened it in 1982 during a blizzard. Now 30 members strong, the cooperative gallery offers monthly exhibits and is open to the public from noon to 4:30 Wednesday through Sunday. Opening receptions are usually the first Sunday of the month and Art/Place also participates in occasional Friday evening Fairfield gallery tours.  In addition to the occasional invited artist, Art/Place members have one-person and group shows throughout the year.
