Impressionist art in Old Lyme:
Exhibit links colony with Giverny
RobinsonWeddingWEB.jpg
The Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme is the first venue for the exhibition, Impressionist Giverny: American Painters in France, 1885-1915. Selections from the Terra Foundation for American Art. Organized by the Musée d’Art Américain Giverny and on view May 3 through July 27, this exhibition of more than 50 oil paintings features Impressionist masterworks by American expatriate artists who worked in this small French village.

Attracted by the presence of the Impressionist master Claude Monet, who settled in Giverny in 1883, an international community of artists flocked there from the late 1880s through World War I. More than 70% were Americans.

The exhibition includes such artists as John Leslie Breck, Theodore Robinson, Willard Metcalf, Louis Paul Dessar, Frederick Carl Frieseke, and Mary MacMonnies. Divided into four sections, the exhibition traces the chronological, stylistic, and thematic evolution of art produced by Americans in Giverny, from Barbizon-inspired landscapes to impressionist views of the village and decorative depictions of women in gardens by members of the “Giverny Group.”

By establishing a community distinct from the older colonies of Barbizon or Pont Aven, American artists created their own unique vision of the French landscape. Reproductions of archival photos and documents contribute to the exploratory nature of this exhibition.

Appalachian Mountain Club:
Craig Evans to talk about Peru treks
Peru2005181.jpg
Adventure traveler and photographer Craig Evans will make an audio-visual presentation entitled “Peru: Beyond the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu” for the Appalachian Mountain Club on Wednesday, May 14, at Christ and Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane, Westport.

For a number of years New Canaan-based Craig Evans has been hiking in the Peruvian Andes to bring warm clothing, medicine and other supplies to remote, desperately poor Quechan villages, which often have no roads, electricity or medical services. In recent years some of these villages have experienced unusually cold weather resulting in many deaths. In this audio-visual presentation Mr. Evans will describe his treks over passes as high as 16,000 ft. in these spectacular mountains, the remote villages he visited and the colorful, friendly people he met. Mr. Evans’ trips combined hours of driving along dirt roads, camping in desolate valleys, arduous trekking and amazing mountain scenery.

Starting in June:
Neuberger Museum will offer Alzheimer’s program

by CAROLYN MANDELKER
for The Neuberger Museum

About two years ago, Marj Simon, a longtime docent at the Neuberger Museum of Art | Purchase College, noticed in a newspaper item that MoMA had created a program for individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. “I thought, whatever MoMA can do, we can do, too. We have the collection, we have the docents, so why not?” She didn’t have to look far to find someone to benefit from such a program. All she needed to do was to set in motion a collaboration between the Neuberger Museum and the local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Theatreworks New Milford
Gone With the Wind revisited
by FRAN SIKORSKI

“Rome wasn’t built in a day,” and neither was the screenplay for David O. Selznick’s production  of Margaret Mitchell’s epic novel Gone With the Wind.

Author Margaret Mitchell was begged by the movie mogul to critique every aspect of the production. A private person, she offered one criticism on the façade of Tara, and refused to make any other comment on the film, before, during and after production.

Moonlight and Magnolias, a slapstick comedy written by Emmy Award winner Ron Hutchinson about the making of the film Gone With the Wind, is now in production at TheatreWorks New Milford through May 10.

Going Green:
James Martin’s new book for kids
William-_-Crew.jpg
by JULIE WEISBERG

When James Martin II decided to write and self-publish his first children’s book, he was sure to enlist the help of a trusted team of editors, artists and experts: his own family.

The book, William the Garbage Truck & Crew: William is Going Green, was released online in February at williamthegarbagetruck.com.

Since then, Mr. Martin says response to the book from both parents and children has been positive. The author has made numerous appearances and readings related to the book, which follows the good-natured, green, hybrid garbage truck William and his friends as they clean up the fictional city of Jamestown.
