In Ridgefield, March 2:
Art by Iraqis opening at two galleries

The Ridgefield Library in cooperation with the Staircase Art Gallery of Ridgefield will present an exhibit of contemporary paintings by artists living in Baghdad, opening with two receptions on Sunday afternoon, March 2.

The paintings come from Iraqi Art in Chicago, a not-for-profit gallery, which sends 65% of the pre-tax sales of the work directly to the artists and their families. A fundamental tenet of Iraqi Art is that art and artists are not a luxury but are in fact the foundation of society and that the work of artists becomes even more critical in times of social upheaval. Iraqi Art strives to “move artists from the margins to the center, to shine a light into the shadows and give voice to those who have been muted.”

There will be a reception in the library’s Dayton Program Room on Sunday from noon to 2; the library is at 472 Main Street. From 2 to 4, there will be a reception at the Staircase Gallery, at 5 Danbury Road (Route 35) on the third floor of the Tile Shop.
