Craig Evans to talk about Peru treks

Adventure traveler and photographer Craig Evans will make an audio-visual presentation entitled “Peru: Beyond the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu” for the Appalachian Mountain Club on Wednesday, May 14, at Christ and Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane, Westport.
For a number of years New Canaan-based Craig Evans has been hiking in the Peruvian Andes to bring warm clothing, medicine and other supplies to remote, desperately poor Quechan villages, which often have no roads, electricity or medical services. In recent years some of these villages have experienced unusually cold weather resulting in many deaths. In this audio-visual presentation Mr. Evans will describe his treks over passes as high as 16,000 ft. in these spectacular mountains, the remote villages he visited and the colorful, friendly people he met. Mr. Evans’ trips combined hours of driving along dirt roads, camping in desolate valleys, arduous trekking and amazing mountain scenery.
The high Andes near Cusco are famous for the Inca Trail leading to Machu Picchu. In this presentation Craig will take us on several lesser known treks near Machu Picchu and around Mt. Ausangate, the highest peak in southern Peru, a few hours south of Cusco. The treks offer dramatic mountains, glaciers, incredibly divergent microclimates, and the opportunity to interact with remote subsistence farming villages for which the only access is days of walking or horseback riding. Mr. Evans has enjoyed bringing medical, school and other supplies to these remote communities for the past four years and is already planning future trips to bring more much needed help to the area.
AMC members and non-members are welcome. The social hour with wine and appetizers begins at 6:15 p.m. followed by a hot pasta dinner, salads, dessert and coffee at 7 and the slide presentation at 8.There will be time available for questions, discussions and book signing. The cost is $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Bringing along a salad or dessert is optional, but would be appreciated. Christ and Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane, Westport, is just off the Post Rd.(Route 1) in Westport Center. Turn onto Myrtle Ave. and take the first left onto Church Lane.
