Ralph V. Mattera, 75, Army vet, served on Board of Education

Ralph V. Mattera of Darien, an Army veteran who served on the Darien Board of Education for 20 years, died Sunday, May 4, at Norwalk Hospital. He was 75.

Born in Norwalk on May 10, 1932, he was the son of the late Valentino and Francis Mattera.

Mr. Mattera attended J.M. Wright Technical School in Stamford and was a carpenter by trade. He worked many years for Gran Construction and then 20 years for the Darien Board of Education. He served in the U.S. Army.

He was an avid gardener and cook, and also enjoyed fishing and clamming.
Mr. Mattera is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rose; his daughter, Julie Buch of Darien; two sons Robert of Norwalk, and Richard and his wife, Tracy, of North Carolina. He also leaves six grandchildren, Kelly, Bobby, Nicole, Ryan, Allyson and Lauren; and twin sisters, Josephine Monteleone and Connie Parsons of Winter Haven, Fla. 

He was predeceased by his brother, Vincent Mattera of Winter Haven.

Visiting hours are from 4 to 8 on Thursday, May 8, at Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien. Funeral service and burial will be private.
