Maritime youth rowers Coburn, Nash, Bragg, Werner excel at nationals
|
The US Rowing Youth National championship was held this month at East Fork State Park in Cincinnati, Ohio.
In order to be invited to nationals, participants must qualify in a regional regatta.
Over 135 clubs from 30 states sent athletes to this event, including Maritime Rowing Club, located in Norwalk, and included athletes from Darien.
Although there are several different events, the two flagship competitions are the four-plus (four rowers and a cox) and the eight-plus (eight rowers and a cox) — these are the boat configurations raced at the Division I college championships.
In Maritime’s womens four-plus entry were Darien residents, Lindsey Bragg and Quinn Werner, who rowed well in both the semi-final and made their way into the grand final where they placed sixth against some very strong competition.
In Maritime’s womens eight-plus were Marietta Coburn and Caroline Nash who brought home silver medals.
Coburn and Nash were both invited to the US Women’s Junior National Team selection camp to compete for one of 14 spots on the national team.
The national team represents the United States at the World Rowing Championships which will be held Aug. 4 to 11 in Beijing at the new Olympic facility.
Nash was a member of the national team last year and placed eighth in the pair at the world championships which were held in Amsterdam. Bragg, Coburn, and Werner will all return to Maritime next season where they will provide experience and leadership for another successful season, while Nash moves on to row for Yale.
Yale, with DHS alumna Amanda Rich in the boat, won the varsity eight-plus race at this year’s NCAA Division I championship.
Other DHS alumni at the NCAAs were Lizzie Agnew, coxing for Princeton, and Christine Flynn, rowing for Brown, which won the overall points trophy.
