In a field of competitors consisting of the region's top gymnastics clubs, the Darien YMCA Gymnastics Team stood out as a first-rate gymnastics program with an impressive performance at the recent Ocean State Classic gymnastics meet in Providence, R.I., at which it earned two bronze and two silver team trophies.
“This is the level of competition that we seek out,” YMCA Director of Gymnastics Suzanne Pullen said. “It is great preparation for USAG States, where our kids will be meeting up with some of the same talented Connecticut gymnasts they faced this past weekend.”
The Level 7 gymnasts came in second place, charged by first and third place finishes in the 14-plus age group for Katie Southworth and Elsa Imbimbo, for all-around scores of 36.550 and 35.175, respectively. In the 9-11 age group, Stephanie Klokiw's all-around score of 37.225 earned her the third place position and contributed to this level's silver finish.
For the Level 6 team, second place was also the reward for a job well-done. Contributing to this level's silver trophy were Lauren Medwid and Mary Pat Murtagh, first and third place gymnasts in the 12 year old age group for their respective all-around scores of 36.625 and 35.80, and Perry Kindel's all-around of 36.175, which earned her the third place spot among the 11 year olds.
Level 5 gymnasts were awarded the bronze team trophy, with strong all-around scores from Samantha Karpenos and Katherine McCaffrey. Samantha took the first place position with a 35.675 in the 10 year old age group and Katherine's score of 35.40 put her in third among the 11 year olds.
The Level 4 group also finished in third place as a team, with a collection of gold, silver and bronze medals earned for all-around performances. In the 9 year old age group, Samantha Aparicio took first with a 36.80, followed by her teammate Jessica Freiheit, who came in second with a 36.45. Among the 8 year olds, the second and third place spots went to Elise Mercein and Elizabeth Jennings, for respective scores of 36.05 and 35.80. Simone van der Lee, representing the team's 6-7 year old gymnasts, finished third with a 36.075.
Gymnasts in Levels 8 through 10 had notable individual performances as well. At Level 8, Charlotte Morgan and Alena Serebryakova both earned second place in each of their age groups with all-around scores of 35.575 and 35.175, respectively.
Kate Taylor and Laura Durham, Level 9 gymnasts, finished first and second in their age group, for their respective all-around scores of 35.05 and 34.80. Finally, Level 10 gymnast Jessica Bolduc had a silver finish at the senior level with a score of 35.00, while teammate Queenie Chan earned a bronze in her age group with a 34.25.
