Wave Girls Golf
Ko clubs Wreckers

Darien shot its best match since veteran coach Brian Zeyer has been at the helm of the Blue Wave girls golf team this week.

And what made it all the more impressive was that it was not against an also ran team, in Staples, which found itself on anything but the winning end of things this season so far in its 201-201 tie with DHS at Longshore on May 6.

“Oh — that was a great match for the kids,” Zeyer said. “That was the first tie or loss for Staples.”

Darien’s high flyer Stephanie Ko shot 43, matching the Wreckers’ best. Wave rookie Kendall Kyritz shot 47, Claire Baldwin 55, Meg Ardery 56 and Nicole Granath 62.

“The girls, they just went out and they played their own game,” Zeyer said. “And then when they started adding things up they figured out that they had a possibility of tying or winning.”

Darien is 2-5-1.

“Ko, she played solid again, and was co-medalist – and she’s also co-captain,” Zeyer said of his leading golfer who is only a sophomore. “So she had a very solid round. She only had one bad score on the card.”

Ko only carded one fat seven.

“Besides that it was all fives and fours,” Zeyer added.

Darien, having lucked out with finding such a good one in Ko, who is so young — seems to also have been fortunate in developing another strong golfer who could help propel the program for some time to come.

That is Kyritz.

“Kendall Kyritz, as a freshman, had a very solid round,” said Zeyer. “So both of them teaming up together, being sub-50 — 47, 43 — that is what put us over the top for the match.”

Others stepped up too.

“Claire Baldwin, I think, shot her personal best with a 55,” Zeyer said. “So everybody came in with their best rounds pretty much of the year, and it just helped us carry over.”

The Wave is beginning to peak.

“And I think the match at Woodway the week before helped that,” added Zeyer.

That’s when Darien beat Bunnell 221-262.

“And Ko shot 43 that match also,” said Zeyer of her medalist round. “That’s her personal best.”

And Darien’s 201 is the best the Wave’s had in nearly 10 years according to Zeyer.
