Wilton slips past DHS in battle of league tournament contenders
|
Darien shot a 155 to easily defeat Central at CCD on May 13.
“As has often been the case the Blue Wave were led by Philip Winter (37) and David
Bushing (38),” Wave coach Tom O’Donnell said. “But the real story of this match were the solid contributions by sophomores Sean Fahey and Freddy Weber who both shot 40.”
The numbers only begin to tell the story though.
“Sean made a triple bogey seven on the second hole but remained calm and focused and finished his round out beautifully,” O’Donnell said. “It shows that he is maturing in his ability to manage himself on the course. He knows he is a good player and that one bad hole will not necessarily ruin a round if you don't let it.”
Warriors prevail
Darien went on to lose 160-168 to Wilton at Wee Burn on May 19.
Darien's one-two punch of Bushing (38) and Winter (39) played solidly but Wilton’s depth won the day, according to O’Donnell.
Wilton's number one player Brian Murphy was medalist with 36 and he was supported well by scores of 39, 41 and 44 as the Warriors improved to 14-3 with the Wave dropping to 14-2-1.
“Sean Fahey (45), Tim Westcott (46) and Freddy Weber (48) all had a tough day on the same day and while we might have gotten away with it against a lesser opponent, it was costly against a solid Wilton squad,” O’Donnell said. “But we have had a great year and have played with tremendous poise and consistency.
“Disappointed as the boys are I am confident that they will return to form in our last regular season match against Stamford at E. G. Brennan golf course on Wednesday.”
