Boys Track
The 39 bests
May 8, 2008
The Darien Boys track team improved to 6-2 with wins over Central (89-61) and Warde (85-65), but fell to Ridgefield (82-68) back on April 29.
The Blue Wave had a host of first place finishes, but it was not enough to win the meet. Leading the way with wins were Artem Skobrev (1600, 4:31.7), Logan Hohs (800, 2:02.9), Douglas Wright (3200, 10:06.9), Nick Phillips (Pole Vault, 11-6), Matt Liguori (triple jump, 36-4), Alexi Bello (110 H, 17.6) and the 4x800 team of Hohs, James Carroll, Alex Reynoso and John Conley (8:43.4).
Darien trailed Ridgefield most of the meet and inched closer after a 1-2 finish in the triple jump by Liguori and Casey Mulderrig.
With the score nearly even, Ridgefield used an astonishing final 4x400 leg by Austin Von Ohlsen (49.4) to surge by Darien for the win in that event.
This was followed by a 1-2 finish by Ridgefield in the
javelin to seal the victory.
“We had 39 season best or personal best performances today,” Darien coach Tyson Kaczmarek said. “We just came up a little short against Ridgefield. They are a very good dual meet team.
“Their sprinters are lightning fast and we just couldn't cover some of the events like they could.”
Darien is hanging in there for what should be a post-season of fine surprises.
“The guys competed extremely well,” Kaczmarek added. “Our junior class is coming around we had some breakthrough performances by Matt Liguori, Kevin Knapp and Kyle Wilson as well as some seniors like Bob Strother and Nick Phillips.
“We will be a much better team in three weeks. It will just need to take some time and let us keep training.”
