Darien farmers market returns Wednesday
|
The annual Darien farmers market is returning for its 10th year.
Starting June 13, the market will be open every Wednesday from 11 to 6 in the Mechanic Street parking lot, behind the Darien Firehouse. And this year comes with something new: an extension to Christmas.
“The extension to Christmas came about from the farmers,” sponsor Bob Harrel said. “They asked because they sell wreaths and such, and we were all for it.”
The market is also sponsored by the Board of Selectmen and the Connecticut Department of Agriculture. It is part of the Darien Chamber of Commerce and the Connecticut Farm Fresh Association.
After moving from the Center Street lot behind CVS last summer, the market is back for its second year on Mechanic Street and offering the same scrumptious delicacies that it has been for 10 years, including farm fresh sweet corn, vine ripe tomatoes and cucumbers.
Harrel also said they are welcoming the return of a lamb farmer after a few year hiatus, and there will also be a new bakery farmer, the Whistle Stop Bakery, out of Ridgefield, which specializes in pies and pastries.
Nine others from around the state will be joining Whistle Stop: Gazy Brothers Farm, Oxford. Goatboy Soaps, New Milford; Greenscapes, Danbury; Ox Hollow Farm, Roxbury; Newgate Farm, East Granby; Plasko’s Farm, Trumbull; Smith’s Acres, Niantic; Riverbank Organic Farm; and Woodland Farm.
“This is the 10th year in Darien and we’re looking forward to another great year,” Harrel said. “This is one of the best markets in Connecticut and I just hope the Wednesday weather cooperates and gets us off to a good start.”
“This is something we look forward to every year,” First Selectman Evonne Klein said. “The community is eagerly awaiting the farmers market opening on June 16.”
