Fire safety flares legally, safely on Saturday

Darien Sail & Power Squadron and the Darien Advisory Commission on Coastal Waters have organized a training event, “Flare Up,” on how to properly fire marine flares on Saturday, May 17, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., at Weed Beach.

Permission to fire flares during this time period will be granted by the Coast Guard, as safety briefings and training will be presented by members of the Darien Squadron.

Instruction on the use of fire extinguishers will also be available, and there will be an opportunity to use fire extinguishers on a real oil and gas fire, under the supervision of the Darien fire marshal.

Boaters are invited to bring flares and fire extinguishers to Weed Beach during the time of this exercise. Spare flares will be available for training purposes. If they do not have their own flares on hand, training flares will be provided.

For more information, visit dps.darien.org, call 656-129 or e-mail dsps@optonline.net. Owners of expired flares who are not able to attend the event should also contact the squadron to arrange to donate flares for use in this training exercise.
